Look Up A Therapist's License - A State by State Guide

Checking a therapists license should be your first step to check if they are right for you:

  • Follow the link to the main licensing board website to learn more about how that specific therapy profession is regulated in that state.
  • Go to the "License Search" page to do a license check on a therapist. Usually, all you need is a therapist's name, but sometimes you need their license number.
  • Go to the "File a Complaint" page to start the process of filing a formal complaint against a therapist.
  • Go to the "Laws and Rules," "Regulations," "Laws," and "Codes" pages to learn the rules a therapist must follow in that state. Formal complaints must show that a therapist violated these rules for them to lead to disciplinary action.
  • Go to the "Disciplinary Actions" page to see a list of therapists who have recently been in trouble with the licensing board (and why).
  • Call the licensing board's phone number to follow up if you need to clarify or can't find information on a therapist or a profession you're trying to research.
