Services Offered
General Counselling Family Services of Greater Vancouver provides many types of counselling depending on the needs of individuals, children, youth and families. We have offices located in Vancouver, Richmond and New Westminster.
Our general counselling program addresses common issues such as: * A life crisis * Anxiety and/or depression * Conflict with children or parents * Family separation * Marital or relationship problems * Single parenting challenges * Cross cultural family adjustment * Life transition * Grief and loss * Self-esteem * Ageing parents
Programs for Women * Healthy Connections: You and Your Baby - Our Healthy Connections - You and Your Baby program in Vancouver helps pregnant women work through trauma-related issues that can interfere with their ability to parent their children. This prenatal program is designed to begin as early in the pregnancy as possible and to continue after birth for up to three years.
Trauma Services * PEACE Program (Trauma Counselling for Children Affected by Family Violence) Our PEACE program stands for prevention, education, advocacy, and counselling, and is available to children and youth ages 3 - 18 who have been exposed to domestic violence.
* TASA - Trauma and Sexual Abuse Counselling Centre - TASA (Trauma and Sexual Abuse Counselling Centre) provides support to children and youth under 19 who have experienced sexual abuse, as well as support to their non-offending family members. Services are also offered to adult women who have experienced sexual abuse and/or childhood physical abuse.
* VISAC - Vancouver Incest And Sexual Abuse Centre - VISAC provides services to adult women who have experienced sexual abuse and/or childhood physical abuse.
VISAC also provides Child and Family Counselling comprising short term crisis intervention and long term therapy for children and youth who have experienced sexual abuse/trauma or sexual exploitation. Services are also available to siblings and non-offending parents/caregivers.
Services may include play and art therapy, individual, group and family counselling with educational information on sexual abuse, trauma and its effects, emotional support and trauma counselling.
Fees and Payment
Fees for counselling service are charged on a sliding scale based on household income. FSGV is a non-profit organization and fees are required to supplement the funding we receive for these services.
For those who don't qualify for subsidy, fees are $120 for individuals and $125 for couples/families per 50 minute session.
There are no fees for Women and Trauma services.

A community counseling agency is a group therapy practice that offers affordable mental health services. Most are independent non-profit agencies, state agencies, or publicly-funded agencies. A few may restrict who is eligible for services, so it is a good idea to check when you call.
Community counseling agencies are generally more affordable than other therapy providers, but how much more affordable they are will depend on whether you qualify for a discount or sliding scale fee (or if they accept your insurance). Many, but not all, have a policy that they won't turn away anyone due to inability to pay. You should ask about their fees when you first call.
Expect to talk to kind people who want to help you find the care you need. Most community agencies strive to connect you with a live person within 24 hours, if not immediately. If you're asked to hold or leave a message, don't give up; just leave a message and wait. You should hear back pretty quickly.
Most agencies try to set up an initial assessment appointment within a week (some do within 24 hours), though the waitlist to start therapy is usually longer—about a few weeks on average. If you're not eligible or if the agency is not right for you, it's usually still worth it to call or drop in, because staff are knowledgeable about local options and can often refer you to one.
